Comedy, with or without your shirt.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdeBp8J0rqs111 men with out shirts go into Abercrombie & Fitch. :) Improv Everywhere makes me smile. TV celebrity Lucille Ball reportedly learned the comic use of props from Buster Keaton on the MGM backlot in 1942 after she was signed by MGM with the intent of grooming her as a musical performer. Lucy, in turn, influenced many stars of the following generations with her comic technique. Such TV sitcom stars as Penny Marshall, Ellen DeGeneris, and Robin Williams have all traced their comedic styles back to Lucille Ball. And thanks Lucy! Who's your favorite comedian?

ScrapBook emergency maintenance
EDIT: 4:50PM Scrapbook (aka pics.livejournal.com) is back up! Thank you. --------------- Sorry guys for the late notice! We've had to bring down the ScrapBook databases for some emergency maintenance. This means pics in your LiveJournal gallery are going to be unavailable. They should be back up within the next hour. I'll update this post when they're back online and we've checked them out. bt |

We've moved! (but still have to finish unpacking)
EDIT@6:54PM PST We just implemented a temporary fix for our internal network and it *looks* promising. We'll let it bake in overnight and see how well it performs tonight and tomorrow. ------ Hi hi! We've completed the majority of the move and had the site back up by 20:00 UTC (hey, look, I can post! You can read! Yay!) , but there's still some lingering issues that we need to clean up and are aware of so please be a little more patient while we wrap up the odds and ends. I want to echo the lj_releases post where we thank burr86 and dormando for their ceaseless efforts, skill and knowledge. The LJ Ops and Engineering teams have/are *still* working their butts off but without burr86 and dormando's expertise, we could not have pulled this off. For you techies, the slowness on our website is known, and the issue is currently isolated to oversubscribed ports on our core switches. That's direct from our vendor. Yeah, I know... Anyways, we're trying to implement a temporary workaround and we'll be looking to upgrade our hardware as a permanent solution. Please, hang in there a little longer! bt |

Sith-Tar.
During the 1800's people used natural gas to light their homes. A wast product of the gas-purifying process was a sticky black substanced called coal tar. The tar was unusable and very often was dumped into local rivers, but today, coal tar is used for medicines, dyes, fertilizers, and other products. LJ News Special Edition: Server Move, Permanent Account Sale Update, A La Carte Userpics
Welcome to a Very Special Edition of LJ News. Moving Day and What It Means for You Moving What Where? The long-awaited server move takes place this Tuesday, November 18, at 8:00 a.m. PST. We're moving the site from servers based in San Francisco to the servers in our new data center in Montana. A massive data move like this takes a lot of heavy lifting, and to haul all that data from San Francisco to Montana, we have to take the site down, starting at 8:00 a.m. PST on Tuesday morning. We don't think the move will take more than four hours, but there's always the possibility that it could take longer (the best laid plans and all). What Does This Mean for You? During the downtime, nothing on LJ will be available—no posting, no Friends page, no LJ mail, nada. When we bring the site back up, we're going to ease into it rather than open up a floodgate of traffic. Posting might not be immediately available or the site could be slow to load for a while. New servers mean new IP addresses, so it's possible that LJ mail might not reach your email inbox because your email provider or client doesn't recognize the new IP addresses. We're working with email providers to whitelist the new IPs. There are a few things you can do on your end:
- Add these two IP addresses to your "allowed senders" list (or whitelist) and address book in your email client: 208.93.0.18 and 208.93.0.50. These are the new IPs for sending comments notifications and LJ mail to your email inbox.
- Add lj_notify@livejournal.com and webmaster@livejournal.com to your email address book.
If you can't edit the spam or junk filters in your email client, you may need to disable them entirely. Make these changes just before 8:00 a.m. PST on Tuesday morning or shortly after the site comes back up to ensure that your LJ mail makes it to your inbox. Those of you who use domain aliasing to forward your domain to your LiveJournal will need to create a CNAME record that maps to livejournal.com. Please note that we're no longer supporting the A record. For more information, check the domain forwarding FAQ. Before the move, you can check lj_maintenance for complete details about the planned downtime. During the move, you can check status.livejournal.org for updates about the site's status. Permanent Account Sale Delayed We regret to inform you that due to the server move, the Permanent Account sale has been pushed back to December 4, rather than November 20 as announced in the last news post. After the virtual dust has settled from the move, we'll be able to turn our attention to the Permanent Account sale. Except for the start date, the details remain the same: You have a limited opportunity to purchase LJ for life for only $175. It's a bummer to delay the sale, but on the bright side, you have more time to save up. But What About A La Carte Userpics? We know we promised more information about a la carte userpics, and we're sorry that details have not been forthcoming (blame it on the move). We're still planning on having a la carte userpics, but we don’t have any details yet. When the move is over, we'll have more information. We're sorry for the delay. |

Singing flaming toilets, from all over the world.
I'm totally going to see if any of you want to help me with my homework, so to speak. :) I have to pick a variety of shows for possibilities for this community theatre I'm involved with for next season. Here's the links to the four main theatre rights organizations for people to license rights for musicals. Sooo.. if ya'll had to choose between three shows from the following organizations, what would they be? ;) http://www.rnh.com/index.asp http://www.samuelfrench.com/store/index.php http://www.mtishows.com/default_home.asp http://www.tamswhitmark.com/ This is only if you want to help. :) Please fee no obligation, I just know my tastes are a little oh... random. :) And not everyone would probably want to see Floyd Collins.. (Though they should! =) ) This theatre does primary musicals, but would maybe be open to a new Christmas tradition and for the winter is looking for something with a target cast of 2-11 and the summer show can be as big as can be. :) I all ready have a list of possibilities but I don't want to skew you guys at all. So thanks in advance anyone and everyone who helps! I supper appreciate it. :) ----------- For those uninterested in musicals. :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlfKdbWwruY&e Where The Hell is Matt 2008. Updated, super awesome. Makes me happy. :) And: Astronuats can spend months on a space shuttle. Have you ever wondered what the "amenities" They call it a WCS for Waste Containment System, and it makes the bathroom on a 747 look luxorious. Spage-Age Decor - It's a ctually a little bigger than a bathroom on an airplane, but instead of a cornball wallpaper and rounded plastic edges a WCS is all sharp edges, metallic and studded with bolts, gauges, clamps and strange looking machines. And handholds and footrests. The overall effect is torture-chamber modern. The most inviting and familiar sight is a white toliet seat that sits on a metallic platform. Number One - First, let's look at the urinal arrangement. Each astronaut (and astronette) has a personal funnel that is attached to a hose for urinating. Fans suck air and urine through the funnel and hose into a waste water tank. Number Two - For actual sitting on the john-- and don't forget we're in zero gravity-- the astronauts have to unscrew the lid first and position themselves on the toilet seat, attaching themselves to leg restraints and thigh bars. Like the number one arrangement, the toilet waste matter is sucked into the commede by vacumnlike fans. Further Amenities -- The bathroom also contains dry and wet wipes to wash hands and faces. Curtains close off the area for privacy, so it's also used for changing clothes and taking what can't be very luxurious sponge baths. The Bug In The System -- The current "extended duration" or EDO WCS was designed for longer shuttle flights and despite all of those nuts and bolts, has leakage problems. You can send people into space, but designing a non-leaking toilet... now that's a challenge. Last and most importantly, all of you by these fires, please be careful. :( *hugs* I'm keeping you in my thoughts.

We're moving Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at 16:00-20:00 UTC
We're pulling the plug! And putting it back in a different location! Ok, that was bad. Seriously though, our data center move -- from San Francisco to Montana -- is scheduled for THIS TUESDAY, November 18, 2008 at 16:00 UTC (this equates to 8AM Pacific timezone) and will last for 4 hours. Unfortunately it'll be total downtime for all our sites and services -- no posting, no reading, no email. Another news announcement will be posted on Monday November 17, including links to updated FAQs that you'll want to check out before the move. As always, status.livejournal.org will have any updates during the move so bookmark it and check it out for the latest news. All of us at LiveJournal have been eagerly looking forward to this move and I want to thank you for your patience and understanding as we put the finishing touches on something that will allow us to bring you an even better product in the future. Though for us in the Ops and Engineering teams, we'll be REALLY happy if, on Tuesday, everything just works the same way it did on Monday. Heh.

Cancer prevention, and Pirates rum.
7 Tips to Decrease Cancer Risk and Prevent Recurrence It is now well-established that a healthy, plant-based diet, physical activity and weight control help decrease cancer risk. But one of the hottest areas in cancer research right now is the connection with health-promoting behaviors and improved cancer survivorship. Cancer survivors can help cancer-proof their bodies by managing their weight in the healthiest way possible. The same way of eating that will help you lose weight in a healthy manner is the same way of eating that will help you improve your immune function and promote anti-cancer activity in your body. Here's how: 1. Eat a plant-based diet Plant-based foods include a wide variety of delicious foods, such as fruits and vegetables; whole grains like wheat, oats, barley, and quinoa; nuts and seeds; tea; spices like turmeric, ginger, garlic, cilantro and basil; and soy foods. You don't have to become a vegetarian to include more plant foods at every meal and snack. 2. Be physically active every day You don't need to train for a marathon, join a gym or even "exercise." Physical activity includes just moving around more in your day. You can do this in a variety ways throughout the day and in small time increments: • Park farther away, walk to nearby destinations, get off public transportation one stop earlier, take the stairs for even one flight, walk down extra aisles or lengths of shopping malls and grocery stores. • Take one 30- minute or two 15- minute walks. In separate studies, walking three to five hours a week helped reduce breast cancer recurrence by 40 percent and walking six hours a week at a moderate pace reduced colon cancer survivors' risk of recurrence by 50 percent. 3. Try activities such as Qi Gong and yoga They help improve quality of life, reduce fatigue, promote recovery and strengthen the mind and body. 4. Get more good-quality sleep Sleep disturbance is a very common side effect of cancer diagnosis and treatment and contributes significantly to fatigue. Research shows that sleep loss can elevate appetite and hunger hormones, especially for high calorie and high sugar foods. Sleep loss also impairs nutritional metabolism and promotes insulin resistance, diabetes and high cholesterol. Lack of sleep and poor quality sleep increase a person's chances of gaining weight. • Avoid watching TV, reading or eating in bed. • Don't go to bed until you are feeling tired. • Set a schedule for waking up around the same time everyday and limit daytime naps. • After 15 minutes of tossing and turning, get out of bed and try a relaxing activity. Be careful not to do anything stimulating such as watching TV. Relaxing activities, such as deep breathing exercises, mindfulness meditation or listening to a guided imagery CD may help get your body more ready to fall asleep. 5. Integrate mindfulness New and exciting research is teaching us that how we eat is as important as what we eat. Distractions, such as driving, typing, reading, watching TV and even walking while we eat cause us to eat more food, eat more quickly and even reduce the amount of healthy nutrients we absorb from our meals. • Taking a moment to sit up straight and breathe deeply before, during and after a meal can help slow things down. • Eating slowly, in a relaxed environment with minimal distractions, is another way to help promote health, wellness and weight loss. 6. Address emotional eating Learning you have cancer and going through treatment can dramatically affect a person's life. Cancer can be isolating, and depression affects up to 38 percent of cancer patients. To cope, many people turn to food. It's natural to want to cope the best way you know how even though you may know it's not good for you. The best way to help deal with emotional eating is to work with a health psychologist who specializes in cancer. For more information on diet and cancer please visit http://ww.danafarber.org/nutrition. 7. Maintain a healthy weight If you're one of more than 10 million cancer survivors living in the United States, maintaining a healthy weight is vitally important. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 66 percent of American adults are overweight or obese. Approximately 72 million American adults were obese in 2005-2006. The prevalence of obesity among American children has more than doubled in the past 30 years. Overweight is also associated with increased risk for colorectal, post-menopausal breast, pancreatic, kidney and esophageal cancers. Excess body weight accounts for at least 20 percent of all cancer-related deaths each year. Carrying extra pounds, especially in your abdomen, can also inhibit the cancer patient's response to treatment. For women receiving treatment for early-stage breast cancer, gaining more than 13 pounds increases her risk of breast cancer returning by one and a half times. Obesity and weight gain increase a man's risk of prostate cancer recurrence, death and the cancer spreading to other parts of the body (metastases). Vampire Concert
The ancient Romans believed that Lemures, or Larvae, vampire-like ghosts of the dead, returned to haunt their living relatives and cause them harm. In order to exorcise these malevolent spirits and banish them from the home, ritual observances called Lemuria were held annually on May 9, 11, and 13. These rituals required the father of every home to rise at midnight, purify his hands, toss black beans for the spirits to gather, and entreat his dead ancestors to return to the spirit world. http://glumbert.com/media/phoneconcert And why not to talk on your cellphone during a concert. ;) This is seriously awesome.
